κόκκος, ὁ, 1) der Kern der Baumfrüchte, bes. des Granatapfels; H. h. Cer. 373. 412; Her. 4, 143; oft bei Medic., bes. κόκκος κνίδειος. – 2) die Scharlachbeere, coccus tinctorius, mit der scharlachroth gefärbt wird, u. ὴ κόκκος, die Scharlacheiche, an welcher die Beeren sitzen, auch πρῖνος genannt, Theophr., Diosc.; – τὸν Τιϑύμαλλον ἐρυϑρότερον κόκκου περιπατοῦντ' ἔσϑ' ὁρᾶν Dromo bei Ath. VI, 240 d. – Bei den Aerzten. = Pillen, vgl. κοκκίς. – Bei Strat. 64 (XII, 222), τῇ χερὶ τοὺς κόκκους ἐπαφώμενος, die Testikeln. – Auch die harzigen Zapfen mancher Bäume, z. B. der Schwarzpappel.
